Coming to a close just shy of 4 months, the car showed up to have the rust patched but as work progressed it snowballed into a pretty thorough refresh.
Still waiting on special lugnuts to center the 70's wheels, otherwise its complete
Here are the after and before, from actual Gambler 500 participant to a driver
not me in backround
Below are a dump of photos throughout the past 280 hours. This isnt a restoration, rather a refresh that can keep the car on the road until someone more skilled comes along to do the floor.
inside of all front end panels were sanded down, primed, and sealed
sourcing a new hood was out of budget so this one got a few more years welded in. Regrettably the centerline is off by .25" to the passenger side.
Car had been keyed which led to rust under the paint along the entire car
both rusty bits at the edge of the door were vast holes up close
Replaced: Door handle, hood release, trunk seal, fuel lines, both lower balljoints, LH lca, marker lights, wheels, LR brake line, RR wheel cylinder, side trim, fuel pump, and fuel pressure regulator. Parts costs were driven up significantly by the paint and wheels coming out to $3300
Some bodywork mistakes and the Cut/buff are disappointing, but overall I’m happy with how it turned out. Now back to the Locost!

Very nice. I didn’t know you fixed the hood like that, I missed that I guess . I’ve never seen that, most people buy a repro or fiberglass . My friend has a few parts cars so he swaps them for better ones sometimes.

This looks great! Awesome job keeping a great car on the road.
By “special lug nuts for 70's wheels” are they unilug with the eccentric washers? Those are weird.

Seeing used hoods go for $600 felt a little too rich, and there is something to be said for metal/ original panels.

Yeah, “Rotolugs ” that seem to be specific to A ppliance rims, couldn’t find actual specs for the lugs though so its just praying they fit

I guess we are spoiled with parts cars, pretty sure he has hoods stacked up too. He used to buy ratty S30s before they were worth much.

Oh, I don’t know. If the effort brings you satisfaction and joy, then do it.

Question: if you’re going to bondo with cookie dough, isn’t sugar cookie the traditional favorite? The chips here could cause trouble at painting time.
Also, great job.

You pick them out as you go , sugar cookie can dry too fast and crack (bodywork 101)

Fair point. Your would have to work faster. However, I read on a forum somewhere that you could increase the shortening content to keep it pliable longer. Could be an old wive’s tale though.

Woah, impressive! Isn’ t it great when you make 1 part great, and then the rest of it has to follow?

T hey are definitely fun, after driving this around t he block I can see the appeal, on paper its slow but that engine has lots of torque. Being 6ft pretty much places your head into the roof though

Youll probably need to modify the mounts on the frame to bolt your seat straight to the floor

Lower center of gravity, bonus!
And if that isn’t enough, I’ll need a GT40 roof

Yup, been dailying it to work this week. Needs a few small things like a secondary O2 sensor, new halogen bulbs, and some other odds and ends
I ordered some BC coilovers from a shop, and I've got some 18" wheels. It's time to finally modify it a bit
